Solar Electric

Solar Electric Must Be Harnessed.

When it comes to making solar electric power, there are many companies that are working hard to harness this. They are creating new solar furnace power plants to store and collect the sun's energy and to convert it into electric power.

A solar furnace can collect the infrared rays from the sun into a large area by using and tilting mirrors. These mirrors help bounce the heat collected from the sun to a central collector. While this is being seem as a very good source of electricity for some homes and offices, it is more difficult to generate a large volume of electricity.

The solar electricity that is being created is very good on a limited basis. There is, however, the need for more solar electricity than is currently being created. This is in part due to the fact that in order to collect enough sunlight to power a city, you would need a solar plant many times larger than that city. Huge arrays of solar panels, each containing hundreds of tiny photovoltaic cells, would take up a very large area and would disturb the natural environment.

While this problem is being resolved in some areas such as in deserts where there are large open spaces of land, some cities relatively close are reaping the benefits of solar electric. If you take a city such as New York or Philadelphia, there is not enough empty or unused land that can be converted into solar furnace power plants.

So, we are caught in a difficult situation. How can we harness the solar electricity for everyone? This is not a question that can be answered today. Researchers are working hard to develop more solar furnace power plants in areas where the temperature is very hot and where there are wide open spaces. In many of these instances, these locations are near the equator or in the southern hemispheres.

Today we are making incremental steps in our efforts to take solar energy and transform it into electricity. It is a step by step process that will eventually get larger and affect more areas. As we continue to moving forward and generating solar electricity, it is possible that our techniques might advance sufficiently to where we can collect the solar energy needed without the very large solar furnace power plants.

Time will tell the final story as we continue our endeavors to harness solar electric production. It might take several decades before we accomplish our goals, but every goal will eventually be reached. The dedicated researchers and environmentalists will continue striving to make the earth better and to provide all of us with the solar electricity that we will need to run our everyday lives.
