Solar Powered Race Refines Solar Powered Vehicles
Scientists and researchers are currently attempting to introduce and refine solar powered vehicles. In this effort, they are sponsoring solar powered races where the vehicles entered can show the advances in technology.
The last major solar powered race was held in 2005. In that race, the North American Solar Challenge (NASC2005) provided a venue where competitors design, build, and race solar-powered cars. This cross-country event gave the contenders from 18 different colleges and universities an opportunity to compete in a 2500 mile race from Austin, Texas to Calgary, Alberta.
Unless you are very savvy and interested in solar powered races, you have probably never heard about them. When the average person thinks about racing, they think of the major NASCAR events that are held throughout the country. These are covered by major networks and the cars with their drivers are usually sponsored by major corporations.
The solar powered races are much smaller events and do not draw the crowds that the major races do. But do not think they are not considered as important-in fact, they are actually more important. The majority of solar powered races are used as a venue for colleges and university teams to enter solar vehicles that they have designed and developed. These new test vehicles are the wave of the future when it comes to reducing our dependency upon fossil fuels. You are probably thinking that this is just a waste of time but you should think again. The students that make up the teams that are building and creating solar powered vehicles are the scientists of the future-our next generation and our hope for the future. When you first look at a solar powered car you are probably shocked by its overall design. Many of them hold only one occupant and are designed in such a way that they look like alien crafts or something from the future. Solar powered races will continue and the students from the colleges and universities will continue to refine their solar cars and to participate in future solar powered races. It might take a while before these races draw the interest of the average race fan, but you can rest assured that the scientific community and the automotive manufacturers are watching them closely. Someday you might just see some of these solar powered cars on the road being driven by the average person. This is probably a long way off but your can see the solar powered cars featured in magazines. It will be interested to watch as they are being improved and eventually prepared for the average consumer. Until that time comes, you can start learning more about solar powered cars and the races where they contend. It will be very interesting to see how these vehicles change and improve over the next few years.
