Solar Technology Converts Light To Energy

The energy rays from the sun have been heating the earth since the beginning of our universe and man has been struggling for centuries to harness this energy. In our efforts to come up with new ways to use the sun's energy, solar technology has become a new science in the last few decades.

The first patent for a solar water heating system was issued in 1891-yes, more than just a few decades ago. Solar technology has come a long way since that first patent was issued. In the last few decades researchers have been working very hard to come up with new and innovative ways to use solar energy effectively.

The interest in solar technology has been increasing ever since the gas shortage in the late 1970. We have come to realize that we are very dependent upon the whims of other nations and that these other countries can stop our supply of oil at any time. With this in mind, researchers around the country are working to come up with alternative ways to fuel and operate our homes, businesses and automobiles.

Today there are many new products being tested and certified. Many of them are already being used by big businesses and in many instances in hundreds of commercial and industrial buildings that are being built. Some of these include office complexes and hotels that use solar water hating systems to reduce their electric, fuel oil or gas usage-there are even large car washes and laundries that are also using solar energy to heat their water.

The solar technology will not stop at just heating water for businesses. It will continue to develop as we find more and more ways to utilize the sun's energy.

The use of solar technology in our homes has been gradually changing. Many of us have not converted to a major solar system, but there are several small items in our homes that rely on solar energy. The technology behind these developments in solar power has been the result of ongoing research. Some items you may not even think about include your handheld calculator, your outside landscaping lights and even your watch. All of these have been created by the developing solar technology that is making groundbreaking advances through the research and development undertaken by our scientists.

The advances in solar technology will continue until at some point in time we will all be living in homes that are operated entirely by solar energy. This means that not just our water will be heated, but our lights will shine, and we will cook and refrigerate our food.

When it comes to solar technology we are only limited by our own imagination. The time will come when the sun will supply all of our energy needs. All we need to do is learn how to harness this unlimited source of energy.
